Fact One
He built the school, and it still stands in memory
Great-grandfather Charles Henry Roberts built the school and convent in Fancy Farms, Kentucky — a gift of education that still stands in the memory of his family. He was bequeathed to the Catholic nuns at Fancy Farm, who freed him and his wife. He remained a devout Catholic until his death, as did his sons Phillip and Gregory.
Fact Two
Uncle Paul went the other way
Uncle Paul Green was slated to ship out to the front lines on D-Day, one of the most dangerous military operations in history. Uncle Paul decided to go the other way. He told his son that the soldiers who survived the war were coming back to a racist society, and he wasn’t about to give up his life for the KKK. He hid out until the war was over. He had connections, and his colonel got him out of being court-martialed.
Fact Three
A cousin in Poplar Bluff who remembers
Our great-grandmother’s sister had a child who was the grandmother of Carolyn Diggs, aged 84, who is still living in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She knows a great deal of the history of our family in Paducah and would love to know more of her surviving family members. Michael B. speaks to her on the regular.
